Lucas S. Godwin
About
Lucas S. Godwin is a licensed attorney concentrating in the areas of family law, civil domestic violence, and divorce. Lucas is passionate about family law and prides himself in providing clients with the tools necessary to navigate through their family law disputes. As a former Staff Attorney at a legal aid non-profit, Lucas understands the highly emotional and difficult nature of family law proceedings. Lucas’s skills, gained through his representation of survivors of domestic violence in their family law cases, translate to both a practical and solutions-oriented approach towards assisting his clients in achieving favorable outcomes. Lucas believes that no matter how complex a case may be, often the best solution is a reasonable settlement. However, when settlement is not feasible, Lucas is prepared to litigate his clients’ interests.
Lucas obtained his Juris Doctorate from DePaul University College of Law. During law school, Lucas strived to diversify his experiences in family law in order to obtain a well-rounded understanding of the law. Lucas clerked for a solo practitioner in Chicago, at a larger family law firm, and at the Office of the Public Guardian’s Domestic Relations Division. Lucas also participated in an externship with the Honorable Judge Martiza Martinez of the Domestic Relations Division of Cook County, after having previously served as a pro bono assistant for self-represented litigants for the Honorable Judge John Carr. Lucas participated in DePaul’s Domestic Violence Practicum through Ascend Justice. Lucas was on the Dean’s List twice in law school, and was the 1L Representative, Secretary, and then President of the Child and Family Law Association at DePaul.
Lucas is a native of North Carolina; however, he has called Chicago home since 2020. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, a minor in History, and a concentration in pre-law. In his free time, he enjoys traveling home to North Carolina, traveling abroad, and spending time with his friends and his dog, Diva.
